Mary Olivea, Fiber Artist
Residence: Santa Fe, NM
Mary grew up in the northwest, where she began creating art an early age. She switched from art to sociology in college and began a “long pause” in her art career. In 1990 she returned to school and got her degree in Interior Design, in which she worked until her move to Santa Fe in 1999. In Santa Fe she has re-kindled her art career by working first in pottery, then in jacket design. It was then that she discovered she wanted to use fabric as paint, as something akin to collage. As Mary says, “the real thrill, as always, is creating something distinctive out of my imagination.”
