Aleta Ford BakerAleta Ford Baker, SilversmithResidence: Santa Fe, N.M.Aleta Ford Baker taught herself silversmithing in high school. As she says, “I got one of the best silversmithing books and learned how to do it.” Interestingly, she then went into beadwork, which she truly loves. “I consider myself a beadweaving artist rather than a silversmith.” Aleta Ford Baker’s years working in jewelry design in Santa Fe gave her an appreciation for gems. As she says, “I really like faceted gems. I decided I wanted to go through the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) training and then got my diamond grading certificate, but that is about as far as I went.” Of her work, Aleta also says, “I am really interested in the sculptural ascpects of seed bead weaving and also getting a sculptural feeling in the silver as well. I like to shape it into concave and pod shapes and wire wrapping too, which is a lot like sewing. Like my thread is the silver for stringing the beads.”
